It appears to be pine tar, and yes the residue would continue to give you a better grip even if you wiped or washed off the visible part.
What is really bad is Tony L. had the opportunity to have him kicked out of the World Series and didn't. StL would more than likely win the game and Detroit would be down 2-0 and with out the most dominating pitcher in the series. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wall.gif[/img]
Possibly because Tony L. knew that if the umpire checked his own pitchers, they would also find pine tar.
